Schools for Troubled Teenagers Restore Lost Potential

Put Your Son Back on Track for a Successful Adult Life

Schools for troubled teenagers see all kinds of problems facing teen boys. Defiant teens suffering everything from oppositional defiance disorder to attention deficit disorder can benefit from accelerated learning and one-on-one attention. Teachers and counselors at schools for troubled teenagers design programs to address your teenage son's academic shortfall, whatever the cause.

Sudden Onset of Failing Grades

Adolescence is a difficult time of social adjusting, even under the best of circumstances. Sometimes, adjustment can suddenly move in wrong directions. A new friend or group of friends, a new role model, or a negative experience can bring on behavior changes and reduce focus on school. Then one day, the report card comes home, you look at it, and you know your son's academic growth has stopped.

Which Path Will You, as a Parent, Take?

Now, you face a fight over grades, harsh words, dirty looks, and the same old conversations while you try to decide what kind of punishment you are going to impose next. On the other hand, you might encounter nothing at all - no struggle, no answers, and no reaction. From your defiant teen, you expect a fight; from your apathetic or attention-deficit teen, you may not expect anything. Now, it is up to you to choose the path you take next:

  • Continue along as though nothing has happened and hope it all goes away.
  • Take steps to restore the lost academics and re-establish a sense of responsibility through troubled teens programs.

Intervention Almost Always Means Outside Help

If you are one of the lucky few parents who is trained and skilled at taking corrective action in behavior modification, you might be able to go it alone. If you are not, then you will need help from people who are at schools for troubled teenagers. Arivaca Boys Ranch is one such residential home for troubled teens and has a lot more to offer than just classes. The professionals working at Arivaca Boys Ranch, and especially those responsible for classroom teaching, know that not all problem teenagers have the same issues. Likewise, the same solution is not for everyone. Arivaca Boys Ranch counselors and staff know a lot of customized, one-on-one teaching is going to be needed. However, in any of the schools for troubled teenagers, that one-on-one help is only part of the solution. There are actually four parts needed to make an effective approach:

  • One-on-One Instruction in Accredited high school for troubled teens.
  • Understanding The Arbinger Principles provides a good code to follow.
  • Equine therapy provides behavior and responsibility training.
  • Individual and Group Therapy applies what is learned in one area, to other areas.

If you are unfamiliar with The Arbinger Principles, they are comprised of seven points to help move behavior from anger and violence to positive, motivational action.  The principles were developed by the Arbinger Institute, which is a worldwide leader in training on self-deception and its solution.  The principles, in very few words, acknowledge:

  1. Every person has hopes, needs, cares, and fears.
  2. Other person's hopes, needs, cares, and fears are less important than our own; we see others as objects rather than as people.
  3. To see a fellow person as an inferior object is to harbor a violent heart toward them.
  4. We communicate how we feel about others even when we try to hide it.
  5. When others detect violence in our hearts, they tend to become defensive and see us as objects. Violence in one heart provokes violence in others.
  6. Most occasions of outward violence are manifestations of a prior, and often escalating, conflict between violent hearts; that provokes further violence.
  7. Any effort to reduce outward violence will succeed only to the extent that it addresses the core problem—the problem of violent hearts.

Equine therapy involves work with Arabian horses. Arabians have many personality characteristics that are similar to those of troubled teens. For example, stubbornness is met with stubbornness; yelling produces no effect other than resistance. Most of all, working with Arabian horses teaches the boys that trying to accomplish anything by force will fail. An equine therapy school teaches troubled teens new ways to bargain and persuade, gives them a new sense of responsibility and provides new experiences for making friendships and bonding. Equine therapy is effective in helping make behavioral changes permanent, even in the toughest of conditions.

Individual counseling and group therapy by trained and certified mental health care professionals help teenage boys relate what they learn in all areas back to strategies to help maintain their own personal growth. It is an integral part of understanding and internalizing the need for behavior modifications.

When we think of a boarding school for troubled boys, we often only consider them as help for troubled teenagers with emotional challenges, rages, aggressiveness in the home, or behavior problems at school. However, those aren't the only boys who benefit from troubled teen schools. Any condition that stops academic progress must be addressed immediately. Too much is at stake. Whatever the problem is that has affected your son's progress, it can be helped at Arivaca Boys Ranch.
